Level 2 Certificate in Medicines Management for Domiciliary Carers
This training course in the safe handling of medicines is accredited by NCFE – a government recognised awarding body, it also meets all of the requirements set out by CSCI and the Skills for Care knowledge set for medication and is therefore quite thorough – enabling you to meet the required standards in this area for your inspections. The learning is split into 3 units. Units 1 & 2 are delivered as a face-to-face presentation in a 3 1/2 hour session. Unit 3 is a distance learning module that is provided to the candidates once they have attended units 1 & 2 and will take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete. The total learning hours are expected to be approximately 30 hours.

- CSCI Professional Advice on the Administration of Medicines
- National Minimum Standards for Domiciliary Care (Standard 10)
- Regulation 14 of the Domiciliary Care Agencies Regulations 2002
- The Medicines Act 1968
- The role of the care agency
- General rules for adult service users
- 3 Levels of support
- Compliance aids
- Child service users
- Record Keeping in Domiciliary Care
- Medication Administration Records in Domiciliary care
Unit 2 - Understanding Medicines
- What is a medicine
- Legal categories of medicines
- How do medicines work
- Names of medicines
- Formulations
- Administration (or the prompting of) of different formulations
- Dosage instructions
- Controlled drugs
A short multiple choice assessment is completed at the end of this session and delegates take away a booklet to record on-the-job learning evidence for these units. They are also given unit 3 to take away too.
Unit 3 - Safe handling of medicines
- Confidentiality and consent
- Care needs assessment/risk assessment
- Types of medication e.g. antibiotics, analgesics, diuretics etc.
- Side effects and adverse reactions and what to do
- Ordering and receipt of prescriptions
- Pharmacy services that support domiciliary carers
- Safe storage and disposal of unwanted medicines
- Over the counter medicines
- Medication policy
This course costs £50 person and includes registration fees
Training sessions are run by a qualified pharmacist, at your premises and cost the appropriate fee per person (minimum of 10 people per session) plus travel expenses of 28p per mile. Two x half day sessions can be run on the same day if this suits to do so.
