Understand bowel movements, what they should look like and what it might indicate

This training will give delegates an understanding of the bowel and how it works.

The course will also look at why it might not work normally and what that might mean. The delegates will also look at laxatives, stools and why and how to use suppositories and enemas.

There is an optional competency at the end for suppositories and/or enemas.

Course content

The bowel management course will:

  • Take an in-depth look at the digestive tract, looking at myths, facts and statistics for the stomach, the small intestine and the colon.
  • See the digestive tract in action, to understand the digestion process
  • Look at conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastroparesis and paralysis and how that affects the digestive system
  • Give a greater understanding of both diarrhoea and constipation and what faecal impaction is
  • Investigate laxatives
  • Talk about bowel movements and what they should look like, and what it might indicate
  • Learn how to insert suppositories and enemas
  • Optional competencies for either or both suppositories and enemas

Who is this course designed for?

This training course is for anyone who cares for people who need bowel management as part of their care. Or those who want to understand more about bowel management, and how to incorporate it into their service, such as managers, parents or school staff.

Course duration

The theory of bowel management will take two and a half hours with a short break. This course can have additional competencies added which will take the course up to a half day, depending on delegate numbers which has a maximum of 12 delegates.

Course outcome

At the end of this course, delegates will feel competent at understanding:

  • what bowel management is, what the digestive tract is
  • how it works and what signs and symptoms to look out for if it is not working the way it should and why that might be occurring.
  • the optional competencies will allow delegates to undertake either inserting suppositories, enemas or both.

Bowel Management Training fees

Standard training: £395 plus vat and travel where applicable for up to 12 people

With competency assessments: £650 plus VAT, plus travel where applicable for up to 12 participants.
