Course overview

Develop an understanding of the pituitary gland and its role within the body
This training will give delegates an understanding of what growth hormone is, why someone might need it and how to safely administer it. The delegates will develop an understanding on what the pituitary gland is and its role within the body, in relation to growth hormone and other hormones it secretes. The delegates will then look at how and why someone might need hydrocortisone in an emergency and what signs indicate it is needed. The training is finished with competencies in both growth hormone injection administration and emergency hydrocortisone administration.
Course content
The growth hormone and emergency hydrocortisone training will cover:
- Look at the pituitary gland and conditions such as panhypopituitarism and hypopituitarism
- What growth hormone does, and what a lack of growth hormone may cause
- Subcutaneous injections
- The different pens growth hormone may come in
- What is adrenal crisis
What are the signs and symptoms of an adrenal crisis - Adrenal crisis kits and alert cards
- Treatment for adrenal crisis
- Competencies for both growth hormone and hydrocortisone

Who is this course designed for?
This course is designed for anyone involved in the care of someone who has panhypopituitarism and hypopituitarism. This may be care staff, care givers, management or those involved in activities where a person may have an adrenal crisis.
Please note: Upon booking this course, please email us and confirm which growth hormone injection the person is prescribed and if they are prescribed ampoule or vial hydrocortisone emergency medication so that we can order in and tailor the training to your specific needs.

Course duration
Please allow for at least 4 hours for this training to be delivered. The training will involve a couple of short breaks, two competencies and a knowledge check. Due to the competencies, the maximum delegate size for this training is 12 people.
Course outcome
At the end of this course, delegates will feel competent at recognising the signs and symptoms of panhypopituitarism / hypopituitarism and adrenal crisis. The delegates will be able to understand how and feel confident when to give both growth hormone injections and emergency hydrocortisone and the steps that need to be taken after administration.
