Respiratory Training

This course will provide an understanding of the normal anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and provide the carer with the information and skills necessary to safely care for a child with clinical respiratory needs.

This course will give delegates all the information and skills necessary to support a child with Asthma, COPD or other respiratory conditions covering the use of Inhalers, Nebulisers, Oxygen Saturation Monitors and  Suctioning equipment.

This course offers competency assessments for the care and use of Inhalers, Nebulisers, Oxygen Saturation Monitoring and Oral and Nasal Suctioning.

Course content

The course will help participants to understand:

  • Basic respiratory function and oxygen exchange
  • The mechanisms of Asthma and its management
  • Management of Inhalers and Nebulisers
  • The mechanisms of COPD in childhood and its management
  • Other common respiratory conditions in children
  • Use and care of suctioning equipment
  • Oxygen saturation monitoring
  • Oxygen delivery including risks of using oxygen and care of delivery systems
  • Competency Assessments (can be tailored to clients needs)
  • The importance of record keeping

Assessments will be undertaken on a mannequin or with a child if required.

Course duration

Basic Respiratory Awareness Training without Competencies is a 2 hour online session.

Respiratory with Competencies Training is a face-to-face only full-day course. Please allow for a duration of eight hours, which includes lunch and breaks.

Course outcome

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Confidently recognise contra-indications for suctioning and problems that may arise and sources for help and demonstrate the importance of good record keeping.
  • Describe in detail and demonstrate awareness of how the suction machine works and how to care for the machine.
  • Perform a basic respiratory assessment, identify the indicators of performing oral/nasal suction and demonstrate a safe suctioning technique.
  • Participants will have the knowledge to safely administer oxygen to a child. To include an understanding of the risk, benefits and contra-indication of the delivery of oxygen.
  • To have a good understanding of how to monitor oxygen saturation.
  • To have a good understanding of how Nebulisers work to include risks and benefits.
  • To demonstrate an effective technique of administering Inhalers.

Ways to study

The Basic Respiratory Awareness Training without Competencies can be delivered online on face-to-face.

Respiratory with Competency Training course is a face-to-face course with practical elements and competency assessments undertaken on a mannequin or a child if required.

Respiratory Training Fees

Basic Respiratory Awareness Training without Competencies is £295 + VAT for a 2-hour online session.

Respiratory with Competency Training is £950 + VAT and travel where applicable for an 8-hour session face-to-face for a maximum of 12 participants.
