Tracheostomy, Suction and Oxygen Training

This course will provide an understanding of the normal anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and provide the carer with the information and skills necessary to safely care for a child with a tracheostomy.

This training includes oral/nasal suction, oxygen, oxygen saturation monitoring, nebulisers, tracheostomy care and record keeping dependant on the delegates learning needs.

Course content

The course will help participants to understand:

  • Basic respiratory and oxygen exchange
  • The function of secretions
  • How to clear secretions using oral/nasal suction
  • Recognise when oxygen should be used
  • Understanding of oxygen saturation levels
  • The risks of using oxygen
  • What a tracheostomy is
  • Tracheostomy Care
  • Risks factors of tracheostomies
  • Competency assessment of a tracheostomy change
  • The importance of good record keeping

After completing the theory training, participants will be assessed using a mannequin.

Course duration

Basic Tracheostomy, Suction and Oxygen Awareness Training is a 2 hour online session.

Tracheostomy, Suction and Oxygen Training is a full-day course. Please allow for a duration of eight hours, which includes lunch and breaks.

Course outcome

By the end of this training, participants will be able to identify the indicators of performing oral/nasal suction and possible alternatives to suction, describe in detail the preparation of the child undergoing suction and the process of suctioning and demonstrate awareness of how the suction machine works and how to care for the machine.

They will be able to confidently recognise contra-indications for suctioning and problems that may arise and sources for help and demonstrate the importance of good record keeping.

Participant’s will have the knowledge to safely administer oxygen to a child. To include an understanding of the risk, benefits and contra-indication of the delivery of oxygen.

To have a clear understanding of what a tracheostomy is, how to manage a child with a tracheostomy, identify risk factors, manage emergencies and competently undertake a tracheostomy change on a mannequin.

Ways to study

The Tracheostomy, Suction and Oxygen Training and Competency course is a face-to-face course with practical elements and competency assessments undertaken on a mannequin.

The theory portion of this course can be offered online via Teams or Zoom, and practical elements and competency assessments must be conducted face-to-face.

Tracheostomy, Suction and Oxygen Training Fees

Basic Tracheostomy, Suction and Oxygen Awareness Training is £295 + VAT for a 2-hour online session.

Tracheostomy, Suction and Oxygen Competency Training is £950 + VAT and travel where applicable for an 8-hour session face-to-face for a maximum of 12 participants.
