Anti-Ligature Awareness Training

Empowering Carers and Professionals to Recognise and Reduce Risk

Protecting Vulnerable Lives Through Awareness and Prevention

Ligature-related incidents remain one of the most serious risks for vulnerable individuals in care environments. Our Anti-Ligature Awareness Training is a vital one-day course aimed at equipping professionals with the knowledge, awareness, and practical skills needed to prevent, identify, and respond to the risks of ligature use related to self-harm and suicide.

This course supports staff who work directly with children and adults at significant risk, ensuring they understand the complexity and severity of ligature-related behaviour, while developing the confidence to act swiftly and effectively to protect those in their care.

This course is not just informative—it is critical. With 77.8% of suicides in 10–14 year-olds and 68.2% in 15–19 year-olds caused by hanging, strangulation, or suffocation (ONS, 2020), understanding and preventing ligature-related incidents is a duty of care.

Course content

This in-depth training course focuses on understanding the causes, methods, and prevention of suicide and self-harm, particularly ligature use. Participants will explore:

  • A clear definition of suicide and self-harm
  • The scale of the problem – supported by national data
  • Common methods of self-harm, including ligature use
  • Key contributory factors influencing risk
  • Profiling service users who may be at higher risk

Delegates will leave the session able to:

  • Define suicide and self-harm with accuracy
  • Understand national frequency and demographic trends
  • Identify environmental and psychological risk factors
  • Recognise individuals’ susceptibility and triggers

Throughout the day, participants will engage in practical learning, real-world discussions, and case study reviews to deepen their understanding and preparedness.
