Course content

Tracheostomy care is a high-risk clinical skill. Teaching it well — and assessing others to a standard that genuinely reflects their readiness — requires more than clinical expertise alone. This course equips nurses and healthcare professionals to do both, using interactive, multi-modal methods designed to engage all learning styles.

Here is what we will cover:

Day 1 — Teaching Tracheostomy Care:

  • Welcome, introductions and course overview
  • Why clinical expertise doesn’t automatically equal teaching ability
  • How adults learn: learning styles, engagement and retention
  • Interactive games and activities: how to use them to teach tracheostomy topics
  • Skills stations: hands-on practice with teaching techniques
  • Teaching the clinical content: working through tracheostomy topics as a trainer
  • Structuring a training session — from aims and objectives to close
  • Adapting your approach for different learners and settings
  • Practical session: delegates teach back a tracheostomy topic using the methods covered

Day 2 — Competency Assessment & Building Your Training Programme

  • Half-day deep dive: competency assessment in tracheostomy care
  • What competency assessment really means — beyond the signature on a form
  • How to observe, question and identify genuine understanding vs surface performance
  • Recognising when a learner isn’t ready — and how to handle that conversation
  • Practice competency assessment using skills stations
  • Building a consistent, evidenced training programme in your organisation
  • Record keeping, documentation and creating a paper trail that stands up to scrutiny
  • Moving your organisation away from “see one, do one, teach one”
  • Questions, reflection and next steps
  • Competency sign-off by registered nurse

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this course more expensive than others on the market?2026-08-15T12:54:05+01:00

Knowing how to do something and knowing how to teach it well are two completely different skills, and this course takes both seriously.

You’ll leave with more than clinical knowledge and a competency signature. You’ll leave knowing how to read a room, how to adapt when a learner isn’t getting it, how to design sessions that are remembered long after they end, and how to use interactive methods that make tracheostomy training genuinely engaging.

That level of teaching craft translates directly into fully competent and confident staff, fewer gaps in practice, and tight evidence ready for inspections.

Can I deliver training using the materials provided?2026-08-15T12:53:38+01:00

Yes. You will leave with a complete Trainer’s Pack and the practical skills to start delivering tracheostomy training immediately.

Is the Train the Trainer Tracheostomy course accredited?2026-08-15T12:53:18+01:00

The course does not carry CPD points, but delegates complete the two days with a signed competency from a registered nurse, valid for two year

Do I need a formal teaching qualification to attend?2026-08-15T12:53:01+01:00

No. You do need to already be competent in tracheostomy care, but no teaching qualification is required. We provide all the methods, materials and support you need to start training others confidently.
